Cookie Confessions

Brother Martin's famous cookies are a well-visited highlight at Still Waters. There is a little note pasted to the wall behind him that reads, "Cookies are like grace…they are never a blessing until fully received." Many guests at Still Waters can relate to this truth!

One such person relates this story: When I first began to come to Still Waters, I felt rather guilty eating cookies in between meals; I knew it was unhealthy, that I should control myself, and that others would see me as piggish if they saw me helping myself. I had been well-raised to not want to get caught with my hand in the cookie jar!

So I would sneak cookies. I was embarrassed if ever Delcy would walk near as I served myself. I learned how to open that lid as silently as possible. Sometimes I would chew the cookie down quickly just so that the person coming near would not see my jaws munching!

Several years later, thinking back on how I used to see Brother Martin and his cookies, I realized that I no longer tried to eat them in hiding. I had come to know and believe that the cookies were baked with love and prayer for me and anyone else comfortable enough to reach in a hand!

Oh, that we might receive grace from God in the same way…that we might not sneak it behind closed doors without ever wanting to admit it to others, but that we would know that it comes with love and prayer for us and for anyone else comfortable enough to open up their hearts to receive it.

Just for your enjoyment, in case you too have learned to love the chocolate chip cookies Brother Martin is famous for, here is the recipe:
